Mission

To educate the citizens of the State of Indiana on how the proposed amendment threatens the basic rights and legal protections of all Hoosiers, and to empower and motivate these citizens to take positive action against this poorly-worded legislation. This mission will be accomplished through a grass roots movement of volunteers, and will consist of several initiatives including:

  • Increasing the awareness of Indiana's citizens through a public education campaign,
  • Lobbying and educating state legislators, and
  • Fostering partnerships with other organizations that promote equal rights for all Hoosiers.

History

In February of 2005, the group now known as Stop The Amendment, Inc. met for the first time. We had found one another through a website called Meetup.com (a place where people who share interests can come together). Each of us was looking for a way to help stop the passage of SJR7, the so-called “marriage” amendment. We began planning how this small group could make a difference and leave a positive, lasting impact on the State of Indiana for years to come.

Our first group event was to take part in the March 2005 rally at the Indiana Statehouse. Nearly 1,000 people from across the state came together to tell our General Assembly that we would not tolerate discrimination in the Indiana Constitution. The weather was not in our favor as the wind howled and snow fell. The Indiana General Assembly had left us outside in the cold both literally and politically. This event, despite the weather, was a powerful and uplifting experience. It galvanized each of us into an extended family that fully realized the importance of what we are fighting for.

Since then Stop The Amendment, Inc. has grown into a group whose focus is to educate people across this great state on how this amendment affects all Hoosiers, not just a niche group. To help further this cause we have become a partner in an unprecedented statewide coalition (Indiana Equality) that shares our goal to defeat this discriminatory amendment. Through this coalition we now act in concert with other groups and organizations across the state to maximize our effectiveness in this historic task.

During our first year, Stop The Amendment, Inc. has been able to accomplish a great deal. We have educated the public at numerous events, began to lobby state legislators through a letter writing campaign, and reached out to supportive organizations. Our commitment, drive, and organizational abilities have not only sustained us, but have brought others into the fold to help us all meet the task ahead. We encourage all Hoosiers to volunteer their time, talents, and money to this very worthy cause.
